Natural Remedies To Get Rid Of Restless Legs

This is a fairly new website so please bare with us as we continue to write more and more! But first, I want to tell you a little more about myself and then I will try my best to spill my guts on what I know about restless leg syndrome based on my experience. I learned so much in such a short period of time about restless leg syndrome and I am excited to share it with you here.

To be completely honest, I had never heard of RLS until I experienced it myself. No one in my family had it (as far as I know) so it wasn’t even something I could anticipate ever having to go through. During the third trimester of my second pregnancy I started experiencing what I thought was just aching legs at night. Naturally I attributed this to the pregnancy and did not think too much of it.

Fast forward a few months later after my little angel was born, no matter what I did my legs still seemed to ache at night. Not to mention it seemed to get worse when I got in the bed and that pretty much made getting sleep impossible. So what did I do? Like many of you I went on a rampage searching everything I could on the internet to give me an explanation about what my body was experiencing these late night leg pains. My three favorite searches were:

My Favorite RLS Search Terms

  1. Why Do My Legs Ache At Night?
  2. What Causes Leg Pain At Night In Bed?
  3. Reason For Leg Pain During Sleep?

Well to be honest, searching for answers on leg or body pain cause sometimes only make you worry more and that is exactly what it did for me. There were literally 100 reasons why these things could have been happening to me. Every now and again in the midst of the late night pains my legs would automatically jump like someone was jerking them on a string. I remember lying in bed and just crying myself to sleep almost every night until one day I decided I had simply had enough.

I woke up one morning, feeling weak, exhausted and depressed. I put on my clothes and had my husband take me to an urgent care facility in our local area. Ironically the nurse that checked my vitals had a daughter about my age that had been experiencing the same leg pains at night just like me. This is when I would be formally introduced to what I now know very well as Restless Leg Syndrome. For those of you that may be on this trying to learn more about RLS, I will quickly give you a run down on what I know about it.

What Is Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and What Does Restless Mean?

Restless Leg Syndrome also known as Willis-Ekbom Disease, is basically a pretty common neurological disorder that to my surprise affections millions of people each and every year. Needless to say if you have RLS you will experience random aching, painful jerkings, itching, burning or pulsing sensations in your leg(s) usually while you are lying down in the bed or sitting for long or short periods of time.

I would compare the term restless to feeling like your legs are climbing moving stairs but the rest of your body is relaxed or half asleep as if you were ready for bed. It is just like it sounds, restless or like your legs can not stop moving and are unable to rest. So just imagine how experiencing RLS at night throws off so many other things like mental health, happiness and SLEEP cycles!

Who Is Affected By RLS and What Are The Symptoms?

Restless Leg Syndrome does not discriminate in terms of gender, age or nationality however studies show RLS is more prevalent in adult women. While some people experience periods of mild pain intermittently, there are others that go through very intense pains each and every time. Some folks have compared RLS to a burning sensation in their legs or feeling like their skin in literally crawling.

What Are Treatments For Restless Leg Syndrome?

Most people with RLS will tell you that getting restless legs relief is not an overnight process, but it is certainly doable. As we previously mentioned, there are RLS medications out there, however trying a few home remedies and lifestyle changes (dieting, exercising, sex) may be the RLS solutions that you have always been missing to calm those jittery legs at night.
